How to measure AI search visibility, and report it to leadership

By The Venoh AI team · Last updated October 31, 2026

Measurement is where most generative engine optimization (GEO) work stalls: in Modus's 2025 survey of more than 70 B2B CMOs and marketing leaders, 46% named unclear KPIs as their top challenge in moving from SEO to AI search. The fix is to measure the answers themselves. Ask the same buyer questions on each AI engine every month and report a handful of counts that anyone can check.

The five numbers to report

KPIWhat it isExample
Mention rateAnswers that name you, out of all answers to your buyer questionsNamed in 9 of 120 answers
Citation rateAnswers that link to a page on your site as a sourceYour site cited in 4 of 120
PositionWhere you appear in the list when you are namedAverage position 3.2
Share of voiceYour mentions next to each competitor's on the same answersYou 9, Competitor A 41, Competitor B 22
AccuracyWhether "What is <company>?" describes you correctly on each engine3 of 4 engines correct

Report each one per engine and per kind of buyer. "Named in 0 of 30 answers to founders' questions, 6 of 30 to SEO leads'" tells you where to work next; one blended score hides it.

How to collect them

  1. Fix a list of 20 to 50 buyer questions in your buyers' own words, without your company's name. How to write them.
  2. Ask each on every engine you care about, with web search on, three times.
  3. Record, for each answer: named or not, position, cited pages, competitors named.
  4. Repeat monthly on the same list. A changing question list makes month-on-month numbers meaningless.

Connect it to the pipeline

  • AI referral traffic: in your analytics, filter sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai. It is small today for most B2B sites, but it is the clearest direct signal.
  • Ask new leads where they heard of you, with "ChatGPT or another AI assistant" as an option on the form and in the first call.
  • Branded search and direct visits often rise when assistants start naming you, because buyers then look you up.

Making the budget case

Buyers are moving their research into AI assistants: in G2's survey of 1,169 B2B decision-makers in April 2025, 29% said they start research on platforms like ChatGPT more often than on Google, and nearly 8 in 10 said AI search had changed how they research. Present the baseline ("our buyers ask these 40 questions; we are named in 2 of 120 answers; competitor A in 41"), the specific work that addresses it (listings, answer pages, comparisons), and the date of the re-test. Do not promise rankings or citations: no one controls what an engine says, and a leadership team that was promised them will remember.

Want this measured for you? Venoh AI researches your customers' real questions, runs them on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude three times each, and hands you these five numbers per engine and per kind of buyer, with the work to move them and re-tests at day 30 and day 60. Talk to us.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure AI search visibility?

Ask a fixed list of your buyers' questions on each AI engine, three times each, and count how many answers name you, cite your site, and name competitors instead. Repeat monthly on the same questions.

What KPIs should I use for generative engine optimization?

Mention rate, citation rate, position when named, share of voice against competitors, and whether each engine describes your company correctly, reported per engine and per kind of buyer.

How do I justify a GEO budget to leadership?

Show a measured baseline on your buyers' own questions, the specific work that addresses the gaps, and the date of the re-test. Avoid promising rankings or citations, which no one can guarantee.

Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?

Yes, as referral sessions from chatgpt.com, and similarly from perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai. Many AI-influenced visits arrive later as branded or direct visits, so referral traffic understates the effect.
