Why ChatGPT and Perplexity recommend your competitors instead of you

An AI assistant does not pick a favourite. When a buyer asks for the best option in your category, it searches the web, reads the pages it trusts most for that question, and names the companies those pages name. If your competitors appear and you do not, it is almost always because they are on those pages and you are not, or because your own site does not answer the question in words the engine can quote.
1. Your competitors are on the pages the engine trusts
For "best X" and "X vs Y" questions, engines lean on review sites, directories, publisher roundups and big vendors' comparison posts. In our citation study the most-cited sites in answers that left the company out were learn.g2.com, zapier.com, f6s.com, forbes.com, monday.com and blog.hubspot.com. If a competitor has a complete G2 or Clutch profile and appears in two roundups, and you do not, the engine has nothing about you to repeat.
2. Their pages answer the question in plain words; yours describe yourself
Engines lift sentences they can quote: "X is a payroll tool for companies with 10 to 200 employees in India". A homepage that says "Empowering the future of work" gives them nothing to lift. Pages that put the buyer's question in a heading and answer it in the first two sentences get quoted; slogans do not.
3. The engine cannot read your site
- AI crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot) blocked in robots.txt, often by a firewall or bot-protection default.
- Key text, such as prices or product details, rendered only by JavaScript, so a crawler sees an empty page.
- Not indexed in Bing, which several assistants rely on for live search.
4. Buyers ask in words your site never uses
A buyer types "why does chatgpt mention my competitor but not us", not "AI visibility diagnostic". When we asked 40 such questions in buyers' own words about AI search visibility, Perplexity answered with tracking tools (Profound, Semrush, Peec AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Otterly.AI) whose pages use those same words, and passed over firms whose pages describe their service in their own terms. Even the category name can mislead: asked about "GEO services", engines sometimes recommended mapping companies.
5. Your facts are inconsistent, so the engine fills the gaps
Different product names, prices or locations across your site, directories and old press leave the engine to guess. Ask each assistant "What is <your company>?": wrong or outdated descriptions point to the sources that need correcting.
What to fix first
- Find out where you stand. Ask your buyers' questions on each engine, three times each, and record who is named and which pages are cited. Our guide on checking whether ChatGPT recommends you shows how.
- Get onto the cited pages. Complete your profiles on the review sites and directories the engines cited for your questions, and pitch the roundups they quote.
- Answer the questions on your own pages, one question per page or section, in your buyers' words, with a direct answer at the top and an FAQ.
- Publish fair comparison pages against the names the engines pick instead, saying plainly where the other option is the better fit.
- Fix crawl access and inconsistent facts, then re-test the same questions a few weeks later.
Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors and not my company?
Usually because your competitors appear on the review sites, directories and roundups ChatGPT trusts for that question and you do not, or because their pages answer the buyer's question in plain, quotable words and yours do not.
Which sources do ChatGPT and Perplexity use when they recommend companies?
Mostly review sites, directories, publisher roundups and large vendors' comparison posts. In Venoh AI's study of 1,048 buyer questions, the most-cited sites in answers that left the company out were learn.g2.com, zapier.com, f6s.com, forbes.com, monday.com and blog.hubspot.com.
How common is it for AI to leave a company out?
Very common. In Venoh AI's October 2026 test of 835 companies, 74% were not named in any of three Perplexity answers to the plain buyer question for their own category.
Can I make ChatGPT stop recommending a competitor?
No. You can only give the engines more reasons to name you as well: presence on the pages they cite, clear answers on your own site, fair comparison pages and consistent facts.
