How to check if ChatGPT recommends your company, without taking screenshots
By The Venoh AI team · Last updated October 31, 2026
Typing your category into ChatGPT once and screenshotting the answer tells you very little: the answer changes from run to run, it is shaped by your own chat history, and nobody can compare it with next month's. To know whether AI assistants recommend you, ask the questions your buyers ask, several times, on each engine, and count. Here is how.
1. Write the questions your buyers ask, not your own
List 20 to 50 questions in your buyers' own words, the way they would type them into ChatGPT: "how to track if chatgpt recommends my software", "best payroll software for a 50 person company", "which agency helps saas companies get into ai shortlists". Leave your company's name out. Questions copied from your own website measure what you say about yourself; questions from your customers' side measure what actually gets asked.
Group them by the kind of buyer asking (a founder, a marketing head, an SEO lead), so you can later see which buyers find you and which never do.
2. Ask each question several times, on each engine
- Use ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude with web search on, in a logged-out or temporary chat so your own history does not tilt the answer.
- Ask each question at least three times per engine. One run is an anecdote; three runs show whether you are named reliably or by luck.
- Add one question that names you: "What is <your company>?". It shows whether the engines describe you correctly.
3. Record the same five things every time
| What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Named or not | The headline: in how many answers were you named at all? |
| Position in the list | Named first and named seventh are not the same result. |
| Who was named instead | Your real competitors in AI answers, often not the ones you expect. |
| Which pages were cited | The review sites, lists and threads the engine trusts for your category. |
| What it says about you | Wrong descriptions are common and fixable. |
Then count: "named in 6 of 120 answers on Perplexity" is a number you can compare next month. A spreadsheet works for a handful of questions; past that, the copying is where the hours go.
4. Re-test on the same questions, on a schedule
Keep the question list fixed and re-run it monthly, or after any change you make (new pages, listings, comparison pages). Only the same questions on the same engines give you a before and after.
What a first result usually looks like
Expect the first count to be low. When we asked Perplexity the plain buyer question for 835 companies' own categories, three times each, 74% were not named in any answer. That gap, invisible until you count it, is what buyers who do not know you yet experience, and it is what this method is built to show.
Doing it yourself, with a tool, or with a service
- By hand: fine for 10 to 20 questions once. Use temporary chats and a spreadsheet with the five columns above.
- With a tracking tool: Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush's AI features run your prompts on a schedule and chart the results. Useful when you already know which questions matter.
- With a service: Venoh AI writes the questions from research into your buyers, runs them on the engines you choose, three times each, and hands you the count, who is named instead, and what to fix. See how the AI visibility audit works.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my company?
Ask ChatGPT, in a temporary chat with web search on, the questions your buyers ask, without naming your company, three times each. Record whether you were named, your position, who was named instead and which pages were cited, then count the answers that named you.
Can I track ChatGPT mentions without manual screenshots?
Yes. Keep a fixed list of buyer questions and record the results in a table, or use a tracking tool (Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.AI, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush) or a service that runs the questions for you on a schedule.
Why does ChatGPT give a different answer every time?
AI assistants generate each answer fresh and search the web live, so the list of companies changes between runs. That is why each question should be asked several times and the results counted, not judged from one answer.
How many questions should I test?
Twenty to fifty questions in your buyers' own words is enough to see a pattern, grouped by the kind of buyer asking. Add one question that names you to check how the engines describe your company.
